A Moss Lawn
Yes, Moss, that lowdown green creeping stuff is often associated with growing in the shade. It's mysterious and alluring, but we know so little about it. I became a Moss evangelist about twelve years ago when I, quite by accident, stumbled upon its merits as a lawn alternative. My success with growing and establishing a Moss lawn and sharing that process—another article unto itself—has opened many doors and opportunities that are difficult to comprehend even today.
The word got out, and I photographed my Moss lawn for an article in Garden Design Magazine, followed by another feature in Southern Living Magazines. A few short years ago, the Wall Street Journal interviewed me about my Moss lawn in a story about lawn alternatives.
My love of Moss has captured my attention so thoroughly that I spend countless hours studying and researching Moss. I love my Moss lawn, and seeing how Moss grows in nature is inspiring. Its beauty, diversity in species and the importance and role they play in nature are a constant source of amazement and appreciation.
So, the next time you are on a hike or even walking down a sidewalk and spy a bit of Moss growing between the cracks, pause and take a deep breath. This encounter may be the beginning of a long-term relationship with Moss.
Moss Man Forever!!
Happy to find your substack and learn more about moss! I've been converting my lawn to clover (and plan to reduce the size over time with native plants) but I have a shaded section that seems to be increasingly mossy, next to the woods, and I was wondering what to do, and if clover would do okay there. I now think I want to let it just be moss! It's gorgeous.
